About

My name is Lancelot Benn, I was born in Guyana, South America, and raised in the quaint village of Alness, nestled in rural Guyana, alongside my parents and two younger siblings. From elementary through high school, I engaged in a variety of sports including Shot Put, Cricket, Basketball, and Volleyball, all while maintaining a strong academic record. In 2011, I graduated as the Best Science Student from Berbice High School.
Following high school, I pursued an associate's degree in biology at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus, graduating with Distinction in 2013. Shortly after, I was accepted into the University of Guyana Medical School, driven by a passion for addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities.
In October 2013, my family permanently migrated to the USA, prompting my transition to Queens College, City University of New York, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2017 with a BA in Biochemistry and a minor in biology. After graduating, I worked as an Adjunct Chemistry Lecturer at Queens College from 2017-2019.
Subsequently, I began my journey at Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) in 20219. At HUCM, I actively pursued opportunities aligned with my medical aspirations. Notably, I served as VP of Education for my class, engaged in Orthopaedic Grand rounds and shadowing, coordinated research for the Orthopaedic interest group, and conducted research with Howard University Hospital's Orthopaedic Department. Beyond academics, I find joy in cooking, baking, and staying active through exercise.
During my final year of medical school, I was honored to be selected for the NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative 2023 cohort, completing a clinical rotation with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In May 2024, I proudly graduated with my MD from Howard University College of Medicine.
Looking ahead, I am excited to embark on the next phase of my journey as an orthopedic spine surgery research fellow at MedStar Orthopaedic Institution, Washington Hospital Center with Dr. Addisu Mesfin.
