About
Carol is a trauma expert. She is also an accomplished trauma-informed researcher. She has been studying trauma and steeped in applying trauma-informed approaches for the last 12+ years. She has also been conducting human-centered research for almost two decades.
Carolβs training intersects law, social work, psychology, human-computer interaction (HCI), and health informatics. Her mission is to understand people β their needs, behavior, desires, feelings, etc. β and empower lasting positive change. Using mixed methods, Carol researches:
β’ the lived experiences and well-being of various groups (e.g., teens with lived experience of harm on- and offline).
β’ how these groups use and interact with technology and
β’ how their tech use impacts their health and well-being (e.g., mental health, alcohol use, and happiness).
Carol has helped numerous scholars, students, and practitioners learn about and apply trauma-informed approaches. She has also taught 100s of students about human behavior and theories, research methodologies, and program evaluation. Most recently, Carol has been working with tech designers and user experience researchers, helping them become trauma-informed.
Carol has a Ph.D. in Social Welfare, a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.), a Bachelor of Arts, Honors in Experimental Psychology, and an Associate degree (or diploma, as itβs known in Canada) in Police Foundations. She also has four years of Postdoctoral training in HCI, social computing, and health informatics from the University of Michigan School of Information. Finally, Carol has certification in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) research and leadership.
