Dr. Pires is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He is currently the chief of the Department of the Locomotor Apparatus at the university and chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Felicio Rocho Hospital and Orizonti Institute.
Dr. Pires completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residence at the Felicio Rocho Hospital (Belo Horizonte) and his Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at the Federal University of Sao Paulo. Dr. Pires also performed an observership program at the Center for Treatment of Complex Fractures at the Denver Health Medical Center (University of Colorado) and at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (University of California – San Francisco). He also concluded the AO Trauma Visit the Expert at the UC Davis Sacramento under supervision of Professor Mark Lee.
He completed his Master’s Degree at Federal University of Sao Paulo and his PhD at the Federal University of Minas Gerais.
Dr. Pires is a former President of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology – Regional Minas Gerais. Currently, he is member of the board of the Brazilian Society of Orthopaedic Trauma.
He has over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals and more than 30 book chapters. Dr. Pires is especially focused on complex articular fractures, pelvis and acetabular fractures, malunions, nonunions, infection, and soft tissues reconstruction. He is deeply involved on medical education and devotes a large portion of his time to orthopaedic trauma research and surgical techniques, optimizing strategies to improve patient recovery.
