About
Ativan, also known by its generic name lorazepam, is a medication classified as a benzodiazepine. It is primarily prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, including general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Ativan is also used to help induce relaxation or sedation before medical procedures or surgeries.
It acts on the brain and central nervous system by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a naturally occurring neurotransmitter that has a calming effect on the body. By increasing GABA activity, Ativan helps to reduce feelings of anxiety, promote relaxation, and may also help with insomnia or sleep disturbances that are associated with anxiety.
