Dr. Michael Lazarus is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) where he has been a faculty member for over 20 years. He obtained his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Health Sciences, Johannesburg South Africa, followed by internship, residency and chief residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He was a founding member of the first hospitalist group at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis in 2000. He joined the faculty at UCLA in 2003 and was the Clinical Chief of the UCLA Hospitalist Program from 2003 until 2023. Currently he is the Medical Director of the UCLA Hospitalist, Community Practice Sites. He is also the Curator-in-Chief of the Department of Medicine (DOM) online journal, The UCLA DOM Cureus Channel. Dr. Lazarus was the co-course chair of Clinical Skills 1, Clinical Skills 2 and the Advanced Clinical Skills Elective in the DGSOM from 2012 to 2023. He has won many teaching awards, including the UCLA Distinguished Teacher Award, the DGSOM Golden Apple award for Excellence in Medical Student teaching in 2011 and 2018, the Internal Medicine House staff full-time faculty teaching award, the award for Excellence in Education for dedication, innovation and sustained excellence in teaching at UCLA, the Society of General Internal Medicine Clinician Educator award, and the Serge and Yvette Dadone Clinical Teaching Award. He was also the recipient of the Daljit S. and Elaine Sarkaria Endowed Term Chair in Diagnostic Medicine. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Lazarus was awarded an honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians, London. This was based on the endorsement of colleagues, both internationally and nationally, recognizing his contributions to the profession of medicine. He has served as Chair of the DGSOM Faculty Executive Committee, The DGSOM Faculty Executive Committee, Governor of the American College of Physicians (ACP) Southern California Region 1 and was President of the Department of Medicine Professional Group (DMPG) Executive Committee. In addition to clinical, administrative and teaching roles he also currently serves as a Royal College of Physicians International Advisor for the Western United States and is President of ACP California Advocacy Services. His interests include teaching of physical examination skills, bedside teaching and clinical reasoning.
