Ioannis Gerogiannis MD, PhD, PGDipMedEd, FFMLM, FACS, FICS, FRCS, FSASS, MFSTEd
Ioannis is working as Consultant General and Emergency Surgeon with Specialist interest in Laparoscopic Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgery at Kingston Hospital in London. He is also an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals and St George’s University Hospital NHS FT.
Teaching is Ioannis’ passion. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St George’s University London Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Ioannis is also an active Instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), PreHospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Care of the Critical Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP), Definitive Surgical Trauma Course (DSTC) and Modular Ultrasound ESTES Course (MUSEC). He is the Medical Director of a Life Support Course Agency which organises hybrid Trauma and Military Life Support courses and published two manuals: ‘Emergency Trauma Response’ and ‘Tactical Combat Rescue’.
During his Fellowship in Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery in Oxford, Ioannis acted as Surgical Tutor of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (2016-17) and was nominated for Teacher of the Year and Tutor of the Year (2017) by Medical students of the University of Oxford. As Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh he organised a Laparoscopic Course for Oxford Deanery Core Surgical Trainees. He participated as a Faculty in 89 International & National courses and as a Medical Director in 15 courses. Ioannis attended 91 congresses and did 95 oral/poster or video presentations.
His passion for Surgical Education led him to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education and continue for the MSc at the University of South Wales.
He is the Educational and Clinical Supervisor of Kingston Hospital’s Surgical Trainees and an Examiner of the Central Recruitment Panel for the National Entry Exams for Core and Higher Surgical Trainees of London Deanery. He is appointed by Kingston Hospital and the Royal College of Surgeons of England as College Tutor for Surgery. He is a Member of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Trauma & Emergency Surgery (ESTES).
In 2022 Ioannis was nominated by trainers and trainees for the Faculty of Surgical Trainers Medal for his exceptional contribution to Surgical Training.
Ioannis has been the Clinical Lead in Surgery at Kingston Hospital NHS FT since 2020. He created the Emergency Cholecystectomy Service, one of the top 3 services Nationally, according to the Royal College of Surgeons of England, among the ones that participated in the CholeQuIC-ER project.
Finally, Ioannis is the surgeon who performed the first laparoscopic abdominal wall reconstruction (with e-TEP Rives-Stoppa technique) at Kingston Hospital. His interest in AWR led him to apply and become a member of the Educational Committee of the European Hernia Society (EHS).
