About

James Huntley is Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Primary Children's Hospital, Salt Lake City. He was Senior Attending Physician (Paediatric Orthopaedics) at Sidra Medicine Qatar, from 2018-2023, and 2015 – 2016. The essence of his practice is in general paediatric orthopaedics, trauma, neuromuscular conditions (in particular cerebral palsy), foot deformities, clubfeet, and the paediatric hip. Before joining Sidra Medicine, Dr Huntley was a full-time NHS Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill, Glasgow) from April 2009, coupling this with 2 honorary appointments at the University of Glasgow: Honorary Clinical Associate Professor and Barclay Lecturer.

He completed his medical training in 1996 at Trinity College, Cambridge University (Addenbrooke's Hospital; UK), where he won the William Harvey Scholarship. He did his preclinical studies at Oriel College, Oxford University (1988-91) where he was an Exhibitioner, and then an intercalated Doctorate (1991-4) at St Cross College, Oxford University - during which he was awarded the Theodore Williams scholarship in Physiology and the EP Abraham Major College Scholarship. He has a full Blue in Rugby League, and two higher research degrees (Doctorate of Philosophy and Master of Surgery) from Oxford University. Subsequently he was Demonstrator in Anatomy at the Department of Anatomy, Oxford University (1998), and then a casualty–officer at St Mary's London (1998-9).

He undertook his basic (1999-2001) and higher (2001-2008) surgical training in Edinburgh where he was awarded the JIP James Memorial medal in 2005. He achieved his FRCS (Orth&Tr) exam in 2007. He did his Paediatric Orthopaedic and Trauma Fellowship at the Starship Hospital New Zealand (2007-8), and subsequently two travelling fellowships: the British Orthopaedic Research Society–ORS 2009, and the American-British-Canadian 2012.

He has a passion for research and training. In terms of research he has published across the gamut of clinico-scientific paper-types with initiatives in basic science, translational research, case series, methods and clinical trialling – his particular interests are in osteochondral transplant, infection, physiology of the growthplate/morphogenesis, and epidemiology. As of mid 2023, he is listed on Google Scholar [Author: Huntley JS] where his Hirsch index is 21 and his i10 index 36. He has coauthored and edited 3 textbooks.

He is a keen surgical trainer, responsible for a succession of residents and fellows in Glasgow. He was awarded the Ian G Kelly Memorial Award: Trainer of the Year (2011), West of Scotland, and awarded Fellowship of Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FFSTEd) in 2018. He has been External Examiner for the University of Aberdeen Undergraduate course, and External Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh/University of Edinburgh Master of Surgery - MCh (Orthopaedics) programme.
