About
I'm not a physician or nutritionist. I'm a 71-year-old retired US Navy fighter pilot with over 3000 hours flying carrier-based fighters. I became a cluster headache (CH) researcher when diagnosed with episodic CH in 1999. In 2005, after being diagnosed with chronic CH, I developed a safe and effective method of aborting cluster headache using oxygen flow rates that support hyperventilation (25-40 LPM). In 2007 I worked with two others to modify that method of procedure to work with an oxygen demand valve. In 2008 I conducted a pilot study of this demand valve method of procedure with seven participants. Results indicated > 95% effectiveness in achieving a CH aborts in an average of 7 minutes. This method of procedure requires respiration rates that sustain hyperventilation and respiratory alkalosis (Andromeda Strain) until a pain free abort. We prepared and submitted a patent application to the USPTO in June of 2008. The patent application was published in December of 2009 (Publication number US 20090320845 A1) and issued in January 2011.
I began my research in vitamin D3 therapy after developing the anti-inflammatory regimen consisting of 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3, Omega-3 PUFAs and the vitamin D3 conutrients in October of 2010. This regimen has prevented my CH since then and has proven to be a safe, effective and inexpensive CH prophylaxis. I've worked with cluster headache sufferers (CHers), migraineurs, and their neurologists or headache pain specialists providing information on oxygen therapy as a CH abortive and use of an anti-inflammatory regimen since December of 2010. I've also been collecting survey data from over 200 CHers taking the anti-inflammatory regimen to prevent their CH since December of 2011. I made a poster presentation highlighting the results from this survey at the 2014 AAN Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA. I estimate over 600 CHers have started this regimen since December of 2011. On January 21, 2017, I posted a downloadable PDF update to the suggested anti-inflammatory regimen treatment protocol titled: CH Preventative Treatment Protocol for Neurologists at the following link on the VitaminDWiki website. As of 21 June 2017, this treatment protocol has been downloaded 1950 times.
