After studying pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy of the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (Brazil), he obtained a Master of Science degree in biochemistry (metabolism of drugs) from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in 1992 and a PhD in organic chemistry (synthesis of new drugs) from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in 1995. From 1997 to 1998, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University School of Medicine (New Haven, CT, United States).
He has served as editor of JOURNAL OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY RESEARCH (South Africa), guest editor of RECENT PATENTS ON ANTI-CANCER DRUG DISCOVERY (USA), and is on the editorial boards of WORLD JOURNAL OF GASTROINTESTINAL PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS (China) and CLINICAL CASE REPORTS JOURNAL (USA).
He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology (USA), Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry (Canada), Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (USA), World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics (China) and CLINICAL CASE REPORTS JOURNAL (USA).

In 2014, he edited and published a technical book entitled "CLÍNICA E PRESCRIÇÃO FARMACÊUTICA" (ISBN: 978-85-917770-0-6 1).
The particular research focus is on the application of natural formulas in the treatment of acne, ulcers, gastritis, GERD, cancer, depression, anxiety, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, herpes and Parkinson's disease.
His research has been published in FEBS Letters, Biochemical Pharmacology, Nature, Journal of Pineal Research, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and others. Dr. Pereira published more than 30 journal articles, 2 book chapters in the US, and 5 patents. Of these articles, he is the sole author on 15. He invented 5 medications to reverse the symptoms of GERD, ulcers, gastritis, herpes and HPV and filed patents in Brazil, USA, Canada and more than 30 countries in Europe. One of them is a combination of vitamins and amino acids to regress or cure giant ulcers (typical of HIV patients), gastritis and GERD (https://www.heranswer.com/products/333-protexid/), manufactured and sold in the US.
He was an ad hoc consultant to the CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - Brasília, D.F., Brazil).
