PROF DR LIAQUAT ALI Biomedical Scientist & Educationist email:; [email protected]; [email protected] Born in Sabdalpur village of Nachole Upazilla under Chapai Nawabganj District, Prof (Dr) Liaquat Ali is a biomedical scientist, educationist, and sociocultural activist with national and international reputation. He is a medical graduate from University of Dhaka (1982) with MPhil in Medical Biochemistry (1986) from the same University and PhD in Medical Cell Biology (1990) from Uppsala University, Sweden. After initial years of clinical and teaching service in various public sector hospitals and medical colleges he dedicated himself for full-time academic and research activities serving the Institutes of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) which include BIRDEM, Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences or BIHS (Director), and Bangladesh University of Health Sciences or BUHS (Founding Vice-Chancellor). He has supervised/co-supervised more than 300 MS, MPhil, MD and PhD students through a large network of collaborations with a number of academic institutes in home and abroad. With >250 papers/articles in peer-reviewed journals/books and nearly150 invited lectures in 38 countries of the world Prof Ali is one of the most cited biomedical scientists in the region. He has made significant contributions in the etiopathogenesis of diabetes mellitus among Bangalee population, methodology of antidiabetic plant medicine research, nutritional evaluation of local food materials, epidemiology of cardiometabolic diseases, and health system research in general. Prof Ali is presently continuing his research and academic activities in the Pothikrit Institute of Health Studies (PIHS) which is a newly established health research institute in Dhaka under Pothikrit Foundation. He has been serving the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare as an Expert Member in a number of Committees in the Directorate General of Health Services as well as the Directorate General of Drug Administration. He served as a Member of the Independent Review Team for the mid-term review of the 4th Health-Population & Nutrition Sector Program (HPNSP) and he is now involved in the revision of the Program. He is one of the 8 Public Health Advisors (responsible for Rajshahi Division) as well as Convener/Member of several Committees of the Government to fight the COVID-19 Pandemic. He is also actively involved to promote health education among the public and policy makers through various mass media. For his contribution in education, science and healthcare Prof Ali has been awarded with Fellowships/ Memberships/ Honors from various professional organizations including Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (elected Fellow since 1999 and Best Scientist Award in the Biological Sciences, 2014), Indian Public Health Association (Gold Medal in 2011), and Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS-COMSTECH Award in 2013 and elected Fellow since 2017). In addition to his contribution in his professional fields Prof Ali is also known as a sociocultural and literary activist in Bangladesh. He is the Founding Chair of Pothikrit Foundation which operates a popular intellectually oriented cultural centre (Sangskriti Bikash Kendra or SBK) in Dhaka. He has particular interest in history & philosophy of sciences, and among his writings in this field the book ‘Geometry and Philosophy’, published by Bangla Academy is widely acclaimed by the readers.
