About
Briefly, Dr. Alfakir has an M.D. degree with specialty training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and audiology-vestibular Medicine in my country. In her country, with my colleagues, she established the Syrian Cochlear Implant Program. Also, she provided services in communication sciences and disorders and assisted with clinical supervision of speech
pathologist student practicum experiences at Aamal Center for Hearing and Speech-Language Rehabilitation belongs to the Syrian Organization of Disabled. Due to the success of the program, she was involved in the quality management of the cochlear implant program in Qatar at Hamad Medical Corporation.
Between 2010 and 2016, she earned the Au.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University and a Ph.D. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Florida. During the Ph.D. program, she had received several outstanding certificates and awards (e.g., Alec Courtelis Award (1st place), Outstanding Graduate Students, the Dean's Scholar Award of Public Health & Health Professions College in Recognition of Graduate Scholarly Achievement and Professional Promise, Herbert J. Oyer Student Research Award, Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology.) Post-Ph.D., she was awarded the Crawford Research Fellow in Otolaryngology at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology/Audiology Division at the Mayo Clinic, Florida, which was lasting for four years. At the Mayo Clinic, she worked with Otologist and Audiologists team, Laryngologist and Speech-pathologists team, the Aging and Neuroscientists team, and others. These interrelated professional health services resulted in many published papers. After all, she has contributed to many academic journals, including the International Journal of Audiology, Ear and Hearing, Age and Aging, Journal of the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, and Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Alfakir is a visiting assistant professor at Auburn University. She teaches the Neurologic Basis of Communication Disorders, Balance Disorders, Amplification, and Medical Aspects of Hearing Disorders courses for the Au.D. students. Also, she teaches Hearing Rehabilitation courses for undergraduate students.
