About

Juan José María Mezzadri graduated as a Medical Doctor from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in 1975. He completed his residency at the National Institute of Neurosurgery – "Dr. Luis Costa Buero" Pavilion – at the "José de San Martín" Hospital de Clínicas (1979–1983).
He served as an on-call neurosurgeon at the Municipal General Acute Care Hospital “Juan A. Fernández” in Buenos Aires (1992–2010).
In 2002, he created the Spine Surgery Section within the Neurosurgery Division at the "José de San Martín" Hospital de Clínicas.
In 2009, after a public competitive examination based on qualifications and experience, he was appointed Head of the Neurosurgery Division at the "José de San Martín" Hospital de Clínicas.
He was a pioneer in the use of spinal surgery techniques and approaches. His doctoral thesis was awarded the distinction of “Distinguished,” earning him the title of Doctor from the University of Buenos Aires (2006).
He served as Coordinator of the Spinal Cord Pathology Chapter of the Argentine Association of Neurosurgery during 2001–2002 and 2009–2010, and as President of the Latin American Chapter of Spine Surgery of the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (2014–2016).
As editor of the Revista Argentina de Neurocirugía (2002–2006), he succeeded in having it included in the CONICET Core Group of Journals.
He has published 7 books, 51 book chapters, and 84 articles in national and international journals. Among them, the book "Introducción a la Neurocirugía" is used by undergraduate medical students at UBA and other national and international universities, and has had three editions (2006–2011–2020). Other works include "Neurocirugía. Aspectos Clínicos y Quirúrgicos" (2010), "Cirugía de la Espondiloartrosis Cervical" (2021), "Siringomielia Espinal Primaria" (2023), and "Manuel Balado: His Contributions to the Development of Argentine Neurosurgery" (2025).
He has been and continues to be the director of numerous postgraduate courses, pioneering the organization of training sessions with hands-on practice using fresh cadaveric material. He has actively participated in national and international conferences.
Since 2016, he has been Director of the Chiari & Syringomyelia Program at the Department of Neurosurgery – Institute of Neurosciences – Favaloro University Hospital [https://siringomielia.com.ar].
He served as President of the Argentine Association of Neurosurgery (2018–2020).
Since 2018, he has been Head of the Spine Center at the Department of Neurosurgery – Institute of Neurosciences – Favaloro University Hospital.
He was elected Dean of the Argentine College of Neurosurgeons (2022) and of the Certification & Accreditation Subcommittee of the AANC (2024).
