Dr. Keku is trained in medicine and public health epidemiology with emphasis on chronic diseases epidemiology, with extensive research experience. The research career is ongoing, along with other professional commitments. He was a fellow at Genetic Approaches to Complex Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases at The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, and at the 28th ten-Day Seminar on the Epidemiology and Prevention of CVD, American Heart Association, Tahoe City, CA. He was co-PI (Phase I) and co-Investigator (Phase II) of Jackson Heart Study (JHS), multi-institutional (University of Mississippi Medical school, Jackson State University, and Tugaloo College). JHS is a longitudinal study of cardiovascular diseases risk factors in African Americans of Jackson, Mississippi. The study is funded by NHLBI since 1999. Dr. Keku developed the surveillance system for JHS. He was co-PI of Excellence in partnerships for community outreach, research, on health disparities and training, “Project Export.” He was the PI for The center of Excellence in Minority Health CVD core/component: Obesity Reduction through Mall-Walk in Ethnic Minority Population, Jackson, MS, funded by NIH and NCMHD. I’m a Professor of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Director of MD/MPH Program, and Director of Community and Preventive Medicine for medical students at the School of Medicine, St. George’s University. He mentored undergraduate, graduate and medical students. I recently directed and completed trend analysis of both breast and prostate cancer in Grenada, West Indies. My teaching and research activities are centered on Chronic Diseases Epidemiology, Infectious diseases Epidemiology, and Community and Preventive Medicine. I am actively involved in several technical and governmental committees that focus on Chronic and Infectious diseases prevention. I have mentored numerous undergraduate, graduate and medical students, and regularly serve as a peer reviewer for American Public Health Association: Epidemiology section; International J. of Environmental Research & Public Health; Journal of National Medical Association and Journal of Ethnicity and Health.
Research Interests: Chronic Disease Epidemiology: Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD), Obesity, Nutritional Determinants of Chronic Diseases, Genetic Determinants of Diseases, and Clinical Trials. Infectious Disease Epidemiology - Emerging Infectious Disease, HIV and HPV
