During my 45-year career in Medicine I have practiced rural primary care and urban gastroenterology, led medical groups and health insurance companies, taught medical students and residents, and published multiple original research studies. Currently, I am the Executive Director of Adaptive Health, a consulting firm focused on helping individuals and organizations address complex health-related challenges with a particular emphasis on empowering individuals to be effective agents in their own health and care. I am also the Chief Health Officer and lead the clinical team at Bind Benefits, a start-up health insurance company.

Prior to Adaptive Health and Bind, I served in a variety of leadership roles including Chief Health Officer at Blue Shield of California, and President of the Center for Healthcare Innovation at Allina Health. I have the privilege of co-chairing the National Committee for Quality Assurance Committee on Performance Measurement.

My health service research interests include shared decision making, care management methods, population, worksite and community health, applications of complexity science in health care (e.g., positive deviance and relational coordination), and the application of novel analytic methods such as social network analysis and comparative configurational methods, including Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Coincidence Analysis, to health care.

I received a B.S. summa cum laude from the University of California at Davis, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and an M.P.H. from the University of Minnesota. I am Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
