Mr Altaf Awan is a consultant Pancreatico-biliary, bariatric and advanced laparoscopic GI surgeon at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. He was awarded his higher research degree (MD) at the University of Nottingham for his work on role of hormones in oesophageal carcinogenesis. Following completion of his higher surgical training in Mid-Trent higher surgical rotation, he spent one year in Newcastle with Northumbria upper GI team of surgeons (NUGITS), where he further developed his knowledge and skills in advanced laparoscopic and weight loss surgery.
Mr Awan specialises in surgical management of gallstones, bile duct stones, acute and chronic pancreatitis, acid reflux, all types of abdominal wall hernias and weight loss surgery including revisional cases. He has a keen interest in laparoscopic surgery for emergency cases and has helped develop innovative minimally invasive surgical techniques in the management of emergency conditions such as complex acute pancreatitis. He regularly undertakes keyhole surgery for surgical conditions that present as an emergency and affect gastrointestinal tract or abdominal wall. Mr Awan operative work on laparoscopic surgery for pancreatitis, bile duct stone and hernia surgery has been awarded top prizes at UK prestigious national surgical meetings.
Mr Awan is actively involved in clinical research with a number of publications in peer reviewed journals. He regularly delivers talks as an invited speaker at the national surgical meetings and runs Trent regional ALSGBI meetings on a regular basis to help promote laparoscopic surgery. He is also a keen surgical trainer and a regular faculty at ALSGBI advanced laparoscopic skills, LapPass and RCSEng core skills courses. He is currently leading development of robotic surgery in benign upper GI and pancreatic surgery at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.
