Fredrick A. McCurdy, MD, PhD, MBA, FAAP, FACPE is currently the STAR Kids Medical Director for the Driscoll Health Plan. Previously he was Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School and the Chief of Pediatrics at Su Clinica. Rising to the academic rank of full professor with tenure, Dr. McCurdy’s academic career spans almost 40 years. He has held numerous positions ranging from faculty member to Associate Dean for Faculty Development. His academic journey had humble beginnings in rural Iowa and Nebraska, but took him to places as far away as Germany, Panama, and Nicaragua. Dr. McCurdy was drafted into the US Army in 1968 returning to Nebraska in 1971 where he completed both the MD as well as the PhD in 1976. Upon graduation from medical/graduate school, Dr. McCurdy re-entered active military service in the US Air Force and retired in 1993 at the rank of Colonel. Demonstrating that he is a continuous learner, he furthered his formal education by completing the MBA degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2001. Dr. McCurdy is board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Nephrology as well as Medical Management. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physician Executives. Beyond attaining the rank of Eagle at age 14 and establishing a United Way organization for children with special healthcare needs in 1979 while yet a resident in Pediatrics, Dr. McCurdy’s drive to excel has resulted in substantial scholarship in the areas of medical education and faculty development.
