About
In Ukraine I did my PhD about NAFLD. When I moved to US, I joined the Diabetes Division at the University of Texas Health Science Center as a clinical research fellow under the direction of world-renowned Professor Ralph DeFronzo. During this period, I have been in charge of two projects. The first involves the development of novel treatments for NAFLD/NASH. Using the Fibroscan, I established a screening program to identify all diabetes patients with fatty liver disease who receive their care at the Texas Diabetes Institute. Patients then are entered into treatment programs using established interventions, i.e. pioglitazone, or more innovative therapies, i.e. GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors, and AMP kinase activators. The second program that I am supervising focuses on defining the metabolic and genetic etiology of type 2 diabetes in large Mexican American families using sophisticated techniques to quantitate tissue (muscle, liver, adipose) sensitivity to insulin and insulin secretion. Now I am a resident of Internal medicine residency program at Laredo Medical Center and continue my research in diabetes area. I would like to apply for fellowship in endocrinology later
