About

Samsun (Sem) Lampotang, PhD, FSSH, FAIMBE is the Joachim S. Gravenstein Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of the Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT). He is a formally trained simulation instructor and an instructor for the simulation-based component of the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA). A current interest is training in procedural skills, including distanced training during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a named inventor on more than 40 issued US patents. He co-invented the CAE/METI Human Patient Simulator (HPS), the web-enabled Virtual Anesthesia Machine (VAM) simulation portfolio and a modular set of mixed reality simulators for “blind” and US-guided needling procedures, including regional anesthesia, central venous access and prostate biopsy. He also co-invented air-cooled football pads to prevent heat stroke in football players of all ages, the Hamilton Max transport ventilator, venting technology used in a urine output monitor and the PanVentTM Emergency Use Ventilator designed for use during the COVID pandemic. His other contributions include virtual humans for clinical team training, pervasive simulation on mobile devices, race-specific pharmacodynamics modeling and procedural simulators designed for self-instruction and self-debriefing for competency-based training. His numerous awards include the 2007 Society for Education in Anesthesia/Duke Award for Excellence and Innovation in Anesthesia Education, the only non-physician to receive the award to date. He is the principal investigator on multiple funded grants, the latest one from DoD.
