Dr. Michael Marohn was recruited in 2004 by Dr. Julie Freischlag to join Johns Hopkins after 20 years pushing emerging surgical technologies in the US Military. He left the US Military as a USAF Colonel & Vice-Chair of Surgery, Uniformed Services University. A pioneer in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), he co-founded DOD’s Emerging Surgery Technology program, conducting >250 courses for >2,500 Military surgeons worldwide, teaching basic & advanced MIS, image guided surgery, ultrasound, surgical endoscopy, & surgical robotics. For ten years, he was Associate Program Director of Walter Reed’s General Surgery Residency. At Johns Hopkins, he succeeded Dr. Mark Talamini as MIS Fellowship Program Director for 7 years. He directed Hopkins’ Minimally Invasive Surgery Training & Innovation Center (MISTIC) for 10 years while maintaining a busy advanced MIS surgical practice, focusing on foregut, hindgut, and solid organ problems, including robotic surgery. Her remains a ‘go to’ senior surgeon at Johns Hopkins for complex, reoperative MIS cases. A NOTES pioneer, he was a founding member of SAGES/ASGE NOSCAR- providing leadership for the safe investigation of NOTES. He has a longstanding interest in global health- using laparoscopy as a development tool in Peru, China, Mongolia, Moldova, Korea, and elsewhere. A collaborative innovator, Dr. Marohn remains a champion of transdisciplinary efforts to harness technology for improved patient care & safety. He is a member of the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence. He received both Teacher of the Year for Surgery Residents and Teacher of the Year for Surgery Medical Students at Johns Hopkins in 2019- both programs ranked first in the nation.
