About
Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with minors in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2006. She received her PhD in Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010. Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt completed her Medical Degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2014 and went on to complete her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita in 2017. Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt joined the Internal Medicine Department at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita following the completion of her residency and was on faculty as an Associate Professor of Medicine. She joined the faculty at UAB Medicine Huntsville in July 2025 as an Assistant Dean of Research and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt is actively engaged in clinical trials research in the areas of Psychiatry, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, and General Internal Medicine. She has served as a principal investigator on over 35 clinical trials with pharmaceutical companies, the National Institute of Health, and private foundations. As the Assistant Dean of Research, she oversees the research enterprise at UAB Medicine Huntsville and is responsible for the development and growth of research on the campus. She leads a faculty and resident mentoring program in clinical trials to help develop new PIs for research.
Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt is a board-certified Internist and maintains an active general medicine practice. Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt was recently awarded with the Early Career Achievement in Medicine Alumni Award from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She has also been honored with the Excellence in Healthcare Award, Women Who Lead Healthcare Award, 40 under 40 in Wichita, and Healthcare Hero Awards by the Wichita Business Journal. Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt has also received the American College of Physicians Early Career Physician of the Year Award for the Kansas ACP Chapter.
