Professor Amer Awan is a UK-trained Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with
broad expertise in adult and pediatric retinal diseases at Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad,
Pakistan. He completed his vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Tennent Institute of
Ophthalmology, Glasgow, and holds fellowships from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
(London), the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons (Glasgow).
A pioneer in the adoption of 27-gauge vitrectomy in South Asia, Professor Awan has performed
thousands of complex retinal and cataract surgeries. His clinical focus lies in advanced sutureless
microincision vitrectomy using both 25- and 27-gauge systems. He is a Fellow of the American
Society of Retina Specialists, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and an alumnus of
the Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program.
Professor Awan is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London) and the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow), and serves as a council member of several
prominent national and international ophthalmic societies. His exceptional contributions to
ophthalmology have earned him multiple accolades, including the APAO Achievement Award, the
President’s Award of Excellence, and the Lateef Chaudhry Gold Medal for Vitreoretinal Services in
Pakistan.
As a dedicated academic and surgical educator, he is frequently invited to deliver lectures, live
surgical demonstrations, and instructional courses at leading national and international
conferences. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and currently serves as
Principal Investigator for several multicenter clinical trials, including the Asia Pacific Ocular
Trauma Study (APOTS) and the ALVOEYE Trial evaluating biosimilar Aflibercept in wet age-related
macular degeneration.
