Dr. Samuel Jacob is the Clinical Research Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart-Lung Transplant program at Mayo Clinic Florida, and an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Mayo College of Medicine and Science. He joined the Mayo Clinic staff in March 2017. Dr. Jacob trained in general surgery at Masonic Medical Center Illinois University. He completed his post-doctorate clinical research at Yale, heart transplant and mechanical support at Baylor University Medical Center, and cardiothoracic surgery, thoracic transplant and ECMO at Harvard. He is board-certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr. Jacob is the recipient of the Sanford Pediatric Research Collaborative award. He is the director and principal investigator for an active research grant funded by Mayo Clinic. His lab is investigating the role of mitochondrial DNA and rejection in heart and lung transplantation. He is active in medical research, mentoring students and fellows, and innovation. He designed a new lung transplant retractor at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Jacob is a member of key specialty societies including the American Medical Association, American Society of Transplantation, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Thoracic Surgery Society, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Scottish Society for Experimental Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dr. Jacob is also active in his scholarly pursuits. He served as a peer reviewer for high impact surgical journals including the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery/Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chest, SAGE, Innovation and BMJ medical journal. Dr. Jacob has developed educational programs and content for intensive capstone courses and projects on the topics of VADs, Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care, Heart Failure and Mechanical Support for Yale University, Harvard Medical School, and Baylor Medical Center. He has actively provided lectures to medical students, residents and fellows.
