John D Mahan, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSU COM), where he is Director of the Center for Faculty Development at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH), Director of Medical Education in the OSU Center for FAME (Faculty Advancement, Mentoring and Engagement) and Program Director for the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/OSU. He founded and serves as Director of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) Metabolic Bone Clinic and was Medical Director of the NCH Clinical Studies Center from 2008-2014. He has served on the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) Council and co-chairs the ASPN Training Program Directors (TPD) Committee. He has served as a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Workforce Committee. He now serves on the International Pediatric Nephrology Association Council where he chairs the Professional Education Committee and serve on the Fellowship Committee.
Dr. Mahan received his MD degree from Hahnemann University and completed his Residency in Pediatrics (and served as Pediatric Chief Resident) and Fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at the University of Minnesota. At NCH he served as Director of the Pediatric Nephrology Division from 1999-2005. His research career has focused on efforts to define 1) the pathogenesis of glomerular disorders (GN, nephrotic syndrome, HUS), 2) best treatment practices in pediatric nephrology (including growth in children with CKD, metabolic bone disorders, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension), and 3) evidence-based innovations in medical education. He is a founding member and serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium, serves on the NIH CKiD Growth Studies Sub-Committee and the NIH CureGN Recruitment and Retention Committee.
He has been a Board member of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Serving Ohio and Kentucky since 2001 and completed a two-year term as President of the Board in 2007. He served as Chair of the NKF Serving Ohio and Kentucky Medical Advisory Board from 1999-2016. He presently chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics Pedialink Editorial Board and has served as a member of the AAP Pediatric Nephrology PREP Committee.
Dr Mahan has been honored with the Outstanding Teacher of the Year in the OSU Department of Pediatrics in 1987 and 2002. He was elected to The OSU COM Courage to Teach organization in 2014 and the Central Ohio Medical Review Club in 2002. He received the OSU COM Faculty Teaching Award in 2006 and the OSU COM Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to education in 2020. He was selected to the Drexel University College of Medicine Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 2012 and received the Drexel University College of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. In 2013 he received the prestigious ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award and was elected to the Arthur Gold Humanism Society.
