Dr. Jim Bailey serves as Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine, Robert S. Pearce Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine, and Executive Director of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Tennessee Population Health Consortium, a statewide partnership including all four of the UTHSC’s campuses, academic institutions, health systems, health plans, and quality improvement (QI) organizations across Tennessee. He is principal investigator (PI) of the Consortium’s signature initiative—the Tennessee Heart Health Network funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)—which aims to strengthen primary and preventive care to measurably improve population health and health equity in Tennessee. Dr. Bailey has served as PI for over 10 major grants and health systems improvement initiatives, has written over 70 journal articles, book chapters, and publications, and authored the novel, The End of Healing: A Journey Through the Underworld of American Medicine. His ongoing work focuses on making health care more patient-centered and effective in improving outcomes for people with obesity-associated chronic illness. Dr. Bailey continues to practice general internal medicine as a primary care physician for adults with complex chronic illness and teaches doctors-in-training.
