Dr. Lipman's research is focused on the field of wilderness medicine, specifically the assessment and mitigation of risk and disease and illness at environmental extremes. His work is oriented towards interventional studies that optimize injury prevention. Dr. Lipman has studied novel devices and medications for the prevention of acute mountain sickness with multiple prosepctive and controlled trials in the high mountains of Alaska, California, and Nepal. He has examined the epidemiology of injuries in ultra-marathon runners in deserts around the world, including: exercise-associated hyponatremia, hypernatremia, acute kidney injury (AKI), and blisters. He has run randomized trials on potential blister prevention techniques and a double-blind placebo controlled trial examining the relationship between non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and AKI. Dr. Lipman has worked with the Stanford University Heller Laboratories on translational studies of novel interventions for cooling exercise -induced hyperthermia and warming mild hypothermia. He has over 50 publications in these fields, including multiple book chapters and several books for both the outdoor lay person and endurance runner.
