Azithromycin oral tablets: What is this medicine?

AZITHROMYCIN (Zithromax) is a macrolide antibiotic that interferes with the growth of bacterial cells. It is used to treat bacterial infections in different parts of the body. Azithromycin also treats sexually transmitted vaginal or urinary tract infections caused by chlamydia. This medicine does not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
What should I tell my health care provider before taking this medicine?


angina, stomatological infections: 500 mg (2 tablets) per day for 3 days. This dosage, with a short administration period of 3 days, is explained by the particular pharmacokinetic properties of azithromycin and the maintenance of activity, in these indications, several days after the last intake;

- superinfections of acute bronchitis, exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: 500 mg (2 tablets) on the first day, then 250 mg (1 tablet) on the following 4 days. The duration of treatment will be 5 days.

They need to know if you have any of the following conditions

kidney disease, liver disease
pneumonia
stomach problems (especially colitis)
other chronic illness
an unusual or allergic reaction to zithromax, other macrolide antibiotics (like erythromycin), other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
if you are breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Take azithromycin tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. You can take the tablets with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Take your medicine as directed even if you think you are feeling better. Do not skip doses or stop your medicine early.

They are limited to infections due to the following defined susceptible organisms:

- Documented beta-hemolytic streptococcal A angina, as an alternative to beta-lactam therapy, particularly when beta-lactam therapy cannot be used.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 12 hours between doses.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Tell your doctor or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days. Contact your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible if you have an allergic reaction to azithromycin, such as rash, itching, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.

Avoid exposure to the sun, or wear protective clothing and use sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps, tanning beds or tanning booths.

If you have severe or watery diarrhea, do not try to treat yourself. Call your doctor or health care professional for advice.
