Maika G. Mitchell, PhD, is an accomplished Senior Director of Administration and Operations at NYU Langone Health School of Medicine, overseeing a budget of over $60 million. With over 25 years of progressive experience, Dr. Mitchell has established herself as an expert in molecular biology and oncology, specializing in areas such as infectious disease, mutation biology, and translational molecular medicine.
Dr. Mitchell’s robust academic background includes a Biology Pre-Med degree summa cum laude from Hampton University, a Master's of Science in Chemistry/Biomaterials from Polytechnic University at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and a Doctorate in Human Biology/Mutation Biology from Edith Cowan University, where her dissertation focused on identifying biomarkers for melanoma progression. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Global Campus, where she teaches Biotechnology and Regulatory Affairs Capstone courses each semester.
In addition to her operational leadership roles, Dr. Mitchell lends her scientific expertise to several organizations and journals. She is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the National Society of Black Engineers. Additionally, Dr. Mitchell serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for Edesa Biotech and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council for the University of Tampa.
Dr. Mitchell's expertise in oncology and molecular biology has earned her several editorial and reviewer positions, including with the Annals of Medicine and Surgery (Elsevier) and the Cureus Journal of Medical Science. She has authored over 25 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, Dr. Mitchell published the textbook “Methods for Clinical Laboratory Integration” which helps operational leaders and administrators effectively integrate their clinical environments, scientists, and research missions.
Throughout her career, Dr. Mitchell has worked as a research scientist, lab director, and technology leader. Her progressive experience includes overseeing and developing clinical research laboratories for non-profit medical schools, private biotech firms, academia, and government institutions including the NIH and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
With her deep knowledge and decades of experience advancing molecular biology research, Dr. Mitchell has made significant contributions to the field. She is a highly respected professional who has dedicated her career to furthering scientific understanding of mutations and biomarkers while also working to improve patient outcomes through research operationalization and clinical integration.
