About
I hold an Assistant Professor appointment with the Institute of Neuro-Immune Medicine (INIM) at Dr. Kiran Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM), Nova Southeastern University (NSU). I oversee the research operations and administrative management of two Department of Defense (DoD) funded Gulf War Illness (GWI) consortia. My background lies in clinical and bench-related nutrition research in older adults. In my early career research, I evaluated factors involved in aging-related disorders with a focus in minority health and disparities. Through my research, I found that ethnic differences exist in genetic associations and metabolic outcomes of obesity, and its associated disorders such as type 2 diabetes. As a nutritional biochemist, I am interested in the identification of diet, natural bioactive products, and nutraceuticals as potential therapeutic agents for complex illnesses. I am currently a Co-Investigator on two DoD human subject research projects and PI of one interventional Phase II study in GWI and one mechanistic phenotyping study in ME/CFS. I teach and mentor students in the Departments of Biology and Nutrition, and serve as Vice-Chair for the Institutional Review Board.
