Abstract

Background & Introduction

Despite significant strides toward inclusivity, the medical field still presents unique challenges for LGBTQIA+ individuals, affecting their educational and professional experiences. This study aims to illuminate the often-overlooked narratives of queer individuals in medicine, highlighting the need for a more supportive and inclusive healthcare environment.

 

Objective

To explore and document the experiences, challenges, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals in medical settings. This research seeks to understand how identity influences professional life and to identify actionable changes that can support diversity.

 

Methods

This qualitative study employs a mixed-methods approach, gathering data through semi-structured interviews and surveys with LGBTQIA+ medical professionals and students. Data analysis includes thematic analysis to identify common patterns and narratives. A comprehensive review of existing literature will complement primary data, providing a broader context to the personal stories collected.

 

Results

Expected outcomes include detailed accounts of personal and professional challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, strategies employed to navigate these challenges, and the impact of existing institutional policies on their professional lives. Preliminary findings suggest a significant need for targeted support systems and more robust diversity and inclusion training within healthcare settings.

 

Conclusion

This study will provide valuable insights into the specific needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the medical community, advocating for policy changes and increased support. By highlighting these experiences, the research aims to contribute to a shift towards a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment for all professionals and students.
