Abstract
Background
Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who exhibit behaviours that challenge (BTC) often have difficulty finding and/or maintaining housing that meet their needs. This study aims to highlight the physical space characteristics of successful residential models for individuals with IDD and exceptional behavioural needs.
Method
Semi-structured interviews were conducted to describe key elements of successful placements and specifically related to physical space and design used to address BTC. Eighteen participants from various settings were interviewed. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, then coded by two independent researchers.
Results
Five main themes related to housing characteristics were identified: (1) Physical Space Adaptations (2) Physical Environment (3) Access to Resources (4) Resident and Staff Safety (5) Evaluation of the Physical Environment. Each main theme had 2 to 4 sub-themes.
Conclusion
The results have been used to create a tool that helps individuals modify homes appropriately for residents with IDD’s and BTC.
