Avoiding Common Mistakes: Ensuring a Smooth Publication Process

Submitting an article manuscript for the first time can be both exciting and intimidating. There are several common mistakes to avoid when writing a research paper and submitting your work to Cureus. Here, we highlight some of these challenges and offer practical advice to ensure a smooth submission experience with our medical science journal. (And most of these mistakes in submitted manuscripts will apply to other journals as well!)

Not Following Journal Guidelines

Mistake: Ignoring or misunderstanding journal submission guidelines can lead to immediate rejection or requests for resubmission, significantly delaying the publication process.

Solution: Thoroughly review the Cureus Author Guide before preparing your manuscript. Ensure compliance with formatting, structure, and submission requirements.

Incomplete or Inaccurate Author Information

Mistake: Providing incomplete or incorrect author details can cause confusion and delays.

Solution: Enter full names, institutional affiliations, and email addresses for all co-authors during submission to ensure compliance with our medical science journal’s requirements. Double-check the accuracy of this information to prevent issues. You’d be surprised how many submitting authors misspell their co-authors’ names!

Language and Formatting Errors

Mistake: Manuscripts with grammatical mistakes, poor formatting, or typographical errors can be perceived as unprofessional and may lead to rejection. This is especially important when submitting to Cureus, as only articles with few or no formatting errors will be considered for free publication.

Solution: To avoid this mistake when writing a research paper, proofread your manuscript thoroughly. Pay close attention to instructions for authors. Consider utilizing an outside editing service during submission to ensure clarity and adherence to our medical science journal’s formatting guidelines.

Inadequate Abstract and Keywords

Mistake: An unclear or poorly structured abstract and lack of relevant keywords can reduce the visibility and impact of your research.

Solution: Craft a concise, informative abstract that summarizes your study or report. Select 3–5 relevant keywords to enhance discoverability.

Inaccurate, Incomplete or Duplicate References

Mistake: Including references that are missing key elements such as journal title, references that don’t match the text, or references that are listed more than once in the bibliography are among the most common mistakes in submitted manuscripts.

Solution: Double-check the accuracy and completeness of every reference prior to finalizing your draft. Make sure DOIs link to the correct source and that your references are formatted according to the author instructions in our medical science journal for accurate submission.

Ethical Oversights

Mistake: Failure to address ethical considerations, such as conflicts of interest or patient consent, may lead to ethical scrutiny, manuscript rejection, and even account suspension.

Solution: To avoid these types of mistakes when writing a research paper, disclose any potential conflicts of interest and ensure patient consent and all required ethical review is obtained and documented. Transparency in these matters upholds the integrity of your research and the journal.

Delayed Responses to Editorial Queries

Mistake: Slow or unresponsive communication with the editorial team can prolong the publication timeline.

Solution: To avoid communication mistakes when writing a research paper, monitor your email and/or dashboard after submission and respond promptly to any editorial queries or revision requests. You can even move the process along by sending anonymous reminders from your Cureus dashboard to peer reviewers who haven’t completed reviews.

Proactively addressing these common mistakes in submitted manuscripts will increase the likelihood that your submission will be accepted by our medical science journal and published as quickly as possible. Diligence, attention to detail, and adherence to stated guidelines are all key components of a smooth and successful publication journey.
