The Fast-food Industry and Obesity

Abstract

Fast-food , by definition, “is designed for ready availability, use, or consumption with little consideration given to quality or significance.” The 1940’s experienced the onset of the fast- food industry. It first originated in the United States (California), and later on spread globally. This wide-spread popularity was accompanied by increased obesity rates. Namely, 69.9% of Americans were overweight or obese in 2010, compared to only 13% of Americans being obese in 1959. Our findings show there is a necessity for awareness campaigns and educational programs that impart healthy dietary habits and emphasize obesity’s unhealthy consequences.
