Criteria:

Please provide a 2000 character (max) abstract, outlining the following sections:

1. Objective or Purpose of Innovation:
Since 2002, the University of Minnesota’s CLARION Interprofessional Case Competition has promoted collaborative problem-solving in healthcare. USF Health has competed in the National CLARION Competition since 2018 and launched a local CLARION Competition in 2023 to broaden engagement and select national representatives. This local innovation offers Health students hands-on experience in root cause analysis, leadership, interprofessional teamwork, and faculty engagement. Hosting locally has led to notable achievements: USF Health teams have placed second nationally, earned a Health Equity Innovation Award, and produced a “Best Presenter.”

2. Background or Theoretical Framework and Importance to the Field:
Interprofessional education (IPE) strengthens communication, teamwork, and leadership, improving clinical processes and patient safety [1]. IPE fosters team effectiveness, clarifies roles, and builds shared accountability which are critical for high-reliability healthcare systems [2]. Case competitions operationalize these gains, creating communities of practice that develop systems thinking and actionable solutions to sentinel events [3].

3. Instructional Methods and Materials Used:
Teams of four from multiple professions work with faculty mentors to conduct root cause analysis, apply a guiding framework, and develop feasible recommendations. Materials include literature reviews, PowerPoint decks, and instructional technology. Teams present findings to interprofessional judges using the national rubric.

4. Educational Outcomes to Date:
Surveys and qualitative feedback depict growth in leadership, communication, and systems thinking; stronger understanding of other professions; increased presentation confidence; and enhanced connection to USF Health.

5. Innovation’s Strengths and Areas for Improvement:
Strengths: authentic case realism, mentor guidance, structured evaluation, and national visibility. Improvements: systematic feedback loops, Florida health focus.

6. Feasibility of Maintaining Program and Transfer to Other Schools/Programs:
The model is low cost, mentor supported, and adaptable. A proposed Florida interprofessional case competition could localize impact by addressing statewide health priorities.
