Abstract
Background and Introduction
The majority of surgeries performed by oral surgeons include wisdom teeth extraction, or third molar extraction (Kiencalo, 2021). This surgery is typically indicated in patients for prophylactic and therapeutic concerns associated by impacted wisdom teeth (Candotto, 2019). While many time, the procedure is completed without any significant complications, alleviating patients previous pain and discomfort, complications can occur and be severe. There are plenty of associated complications, including nerve damage, bleeding, jaw fractures, and tooth displacements (Kiencalo, 2021) that are commonly noted and informed to patients. However, a rarer complication includes sinus perforation, leading to a quickly expanding mass in the maxillary sinus requiring an additional surgery to alleviate. This rarely discussed complication will be further evaluated in the case report to spread awareness and educate readers about the topic.
Objective
How can wisdom teeth extraction lead to chronic nasal congestion and severe headaches, requiring an additional procedure to provide relief to patients?
Results
Following patient presentation, image findings indicate a ‘rock-like’ mass in the right maxillary sinus cavity. Urgent Caldwell-Luc surgery is performed without complications with full patient recovery.
Conclusion
Educate and raise awareness of rare patient complications that have previously been unreported in medical case reports. This report will allow physicians to be aware of such complications and be able to identify and treat them promptly, hopefully avoiding invasive intervention.
