Abstract

Background & Introduction

The significance of this research lies in examining the profound impact Jenette Hubbard Bolles had on advancing women in the field of osteopathic medicine. Women have historically encountered significant barriers in establishing their presence in male-dominated academic disciplines. However, Bolles confronted these challenges directly, thereby paving the way for future generations of women to make substantial contributions to both medicine and, more specifically, osteopathy.

 

Objective

This research aims to explore the ways in which Jenette Hubbard Bolles made her mark in the field of osteopathy, particularly as one of the first women to pursue such a career, alongside the significant accolades she received. Additionally, we seek to highlight her pioneering achievements in order to gain a deeper understanding of how women have historically attained respected roles within the field of osteopathy over the past century.

 

Methods

To complete our research, we used resources obtained from Google Scholar regarding the background and accomplishments of the individual we are seeking to highlight.

 

Results

Thus far we have explored Bolles’ mark on the field of medicine as the first female osteopath. Her path was ignited by her immense infatuation with the work of AT Still. As an extension of such, she would go on to serve as a pioneer for women in this field and obtain a role as the first publisher and editor of the Journal of Osteopathy. In addition to her work in medicine, Bolles was a committed suffragist and represented Colorado at the International Congress of Child Welfare, where she advocated for improvements in healthcare systems to enhance the well-being of children in society. Data collection is still ongoing.

 

Conclusion

Jenette Hubbard Bolles was a pioneering figure in the field of osteopathy, opening the door for women to secure significant and respected roles within the profession. Her early experiences, observing Andrew Taylor Still’s hands-on healing of both of her parents, further ignited her desire to pursue this field. This passion ultimately led her to achieve numerous academic accolades, serving as a testament to her perseverance and accomplishments. Despite the considerable challenges women faced in academia during this era, Bolles navigated these obstacles with remarkable grace, thereby paving the way for future generations of female physicians. Her efforts played a pivotal role in reshaping the prevailing narrative of the time, significantly altering perceptions of women’s roles in medicine.
