Assessing Harm Reduction Attitudes in Preclinical Medical Students.

Abstract

Given the ongoing opioid crisis, harm reduction approaches to treating people with substance use disorders are used to prevent overdose and infectious disease transmission.

Harm reduction approaches for opioid use can include education, needle exchange sites, safe injection sites, and more.

Yet controversy remains over the use of such approaches. Thus, it is important to understand how medical student attitudes toward harm reduction strategies may impact their approach to treating patients in the future.1,2

The purpose of this study is to assess preclinical medical students’ attitudes towards harm reduction approaches using standardized surveys.
