Abstract
Background: Use of Open Education Resources (OER) in healthcare education have increased over the last several years. Despite an explosion in Wiki content, information related to debriefing in simulation remains scarce. Within Wikipedia, currently no articles related to debriefing in healthcare simulation exist. There is mention of “Experiential Learning in Debriefing”; the entry has no references and contains 148 words.
The most well-known medical wikis, Ganfyd & Ask Dr. Wiki, have 0 results related to simulation.
ELATEwiki, a wiki dedicated to electronic learning and teaching, has an article entry for “Educational Simulations”. No mention is made of simulation in healthcare. The section dedicated to Debriefing, “Facilitation: Effectively Using Virtual Simulations,” has 2 references and contains 155 words.
Hypothesis: The purpose of this project was to create a robust, OER wiki entry on the topic of debriefing in simulation.
In completing this project, the author hopes to contribute to, and learn from:
-
The dialogue on OER in healthcare
-
Promoting engagement from healthcare practitioners & experts in OER
-
Engagement with the wiki learning community at large, including monitoring future contributors & edits made to the debriefing in simulation article
The project was initiated during the author's time in graduate school, as part of the "Cognitive Tools and Multimedia Learning" curriculum
Method: To create the Wiki entry, a literature review on the topic of debriefing in simulation was completed in June of 2017. As this project is still being conducted, the final number of articles reviewed, and total combination of key words/subjects searched, will not be available until completion.
Anticipated Results: A robust article entry on the topic of debriefing in simulation, focused on debriefing in simulation in healthcare, available via Wikipedia.
Anticipated conclusions: While unknown at this time, anticipated conclusions relate to:
-
Level of ease/difficulty of contributing to a wiki
-
Benefits/challenges related to OER
Implications for the healthcare simulation community include:
-
Accessibility of relevant simulation information to both healthcare professionals and public at large
-
Consideration of engagement with the OER movement
-
Brainstorming future uses and applications of OER
