Manikin simulation is extensively researched and used as a learning technology to scaffold clinical decision making. At the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), online or distance education is undergoing significant growth. In the Critical Care Nursing Program, we are tasked with providing quality education throughout the province of British Columbia. Many of our students cannot attend simulation experiences in Vancouver and simulation centers in the province are not setup to provide the level of fidelity required to offer simulations that support decision making and learning in the critical care nursing program. Distance students are treated differently and do not receive the same learning experiences due to their geographical location. Yet they are expected to when in clinical practice to provide the same level of safe, high quality patient care to the sickest of the sick of our society.

In order to meet the needs of a growing and significant part of BCIT’s student population, the Critical Care Nursing faculty designed, filmed, edited and created short videos using manikin simulators. Using the same debriefing questions and process as facilitated with face to face debriefing, the faculty created hyperlink keynote presentations as a method of providing feedback. The video simulations and interactive debriefing activities were packaged using iBook Author and delivered to students using iTunesU. The antidotal feedback from students has been quite positive and students report that they feel more confident.

In this interactive table demonstration, participants will be able to assume the role of a student, and view one of 8 video simulations on the iPad, and debrief themselves by using the hyper-linked keynote and other interactive learning activities. At the table will be a number of iPad for participants to view all of the critical care nursing simulation learning experiences that have been developed. In addition, there will be laptops demonstrating the workflow on creating your own video simulations using iMovie and iBook Author.
