Suboxone is available in the form of sublingual film or tablets that are placed under the tongue to dissolve. It is typically used as part of a comprehensive treatment program that includes counseling and behavioral therapy to support long-term recovery.

Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, which means it binds to opioid receptors in the brain but produces a milder effect compared to full opioid agonists like heroin or oxycodone. This helps to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings associated with opioid dependence.

Naloxone, the second ingredient in Suboxone, is an opioid antagonist. It blocks the effects of opioids and serves as a deterrent against misuse. When taken orally as directed, naloxone has minimal effect. However, if Suboxone is crushed or injected, naloxone can precipitate withdrawal symptoms in individuals who are dependent on opioids.
