About

Athanasios Chalkias is an Asst. Professor of Anesthesiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Thessaly, Greece. Together with his team he conducts both clinical and experimental research directed at Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Critical Care Medicine, and Critical Emergency Medicine. Areas of specific focus include cardiac arrest, shock, acute care anesthesiology, perioperative management of extremely critically ill patients, personalized physiology-guided treatment, advanced hemodynamic support, and emergency surgery after cardiac arrest.

He is an expert in Experimental Anesthesiology, focusing on the evaluation of hemodynamics, macro/microcirculation, and tissue perfusion, on the assessment of responsiveness to fluids, vasoactive drugs/inotropes/vasodilators, and blood/blood components, on the therapeutic response in states of shock, on the perioperative and post-resuscitation inflammatory/coagulation responses, on the perioperative and post-resuscitation organ protection, as well as on the techniques, drugs, and adjuvants used in anesthesia, resuscitation, and critical/intensive care.

Prior to his current position he had worked at the Post-graduate Study Program (MSc) “Resuscitation” of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on resuscitation research (physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, experimental surgery, animal disease models) and teaching. He has an MSc degree in Resuscitation and a PhD degree in Pathophysiology/Inflammation from that University.

Prof. Chalkias is a member of the Guidelines Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology, and the Treasurer and Chair of the Committee on Shock of the Hellenic Society of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. He is a full member/member of scientific advisory boards of several international societies, on the editorial boards of several journals, and has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific peer reviewed articles, editorials, and book chapters.
