Dr. Luis Fernandez, M.D., KHS, KCOEG, FACS, FASAS, FCCP, FCCM, FICS, is a Professor of Surgery, at the Department of Surgery, University of Texas Health Science Center-Tyler, Texas as well as The University of Texas, Tyler School of Medicine Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery. He serves as Trauma Surgeon and Medical Director, Trauma Wound Care, the University of Texas (UT) Health – Tyler, Texas as well as a Member, of the American College of Surgeons National Committee on Trauma.

Dr. Scott Norwood and Dr. Fernandez co-founded the trauma programs at East Texas Medical center (now University of Texas (UT) Health – Tyler), and Trinity Mother Frances Hospital (now CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas).

Dr. Fernandez served as the Director of Trauma Surgery and the Trauma Surgeon-in-Chief for Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, Texas. He served as the Chairman of the Division of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Chairman Emeritus, of the Division of Trauma / Acute Care Surgery, Associate Medical Trauma Director, Chief Flight Surgeon, and the Chief of the Trauma / Surgical Critical Care Unit at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital from 1993-2019. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Forensic Traumatology, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr. Fernandez served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and Family Practice at the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler from 1983-2019. He served as an Attending Teaching Staff in the Division of Surgery for Mother Frances Health System in Tyler from 2014-2019.

Dr. Fernandez serves as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Nursing and Medicine at U.T. Arlington School of Nursing, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept. of Medical Education, UNT Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept. of Physician Assistant Studies, School of Health Professions, University of North Texas, Fort Worth, Texas and has been an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Fernandez attended The University of Miami for his Pre-Medical Studies and completed his MD at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. Dr. Fernandez completed his residency training at Northwestern University - Columbus Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, with special training in Trauma and Burns at King’s County Hospital, SUNY Down State System, Brooklyn, New York, NY.

Dr. Fernandez is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, The International College of Surgeons, The American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and the Inter-American College of Physicians and Surgeons, among others. He is a member of The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, The American Burn Association, The Texas Surgical Society, and the Texas Medical Association, to name a few.

Dr. Fernandez is well-published in multiple areas of research both in peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has made numerous oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences.

Dr. Fernandez is a highly decorated Texas Medical Ranger, a retired Brigadier General in the Texas State Guard, and was the Commander of the Texas State Guard Medical Brigade from 2009-2014. He currently serves as Vice Chairman, the State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS) Medical Academy as well as Commander Emeritus, Texas Commandery, Military Order of Foreign Wars.
